Wednesday buzz: Fargas' speed impresses

ESPN.com

MOBILE, Ala. -- Here's what the scouts are saying after watching Wednesday's practices for the 2003 Senior Bowl:

South squad -- Jan. 15
Justin Fargas
USC's Justin Fargas has caught the attention of the scouts with his speed.
QB: Chris Simms threw the ball with more accuracy and zip today. The Texas left-hander threw the ball well on the run to the left, but needs to work on throwing the ball while moving to the right. Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury still needs to show he has the arm strength to make all the throws. He didn't this morning. USC's Carson Palmer continued to impress.

RB: LSU's Domanick Davis did a nice job this morning catching passes out of the backfield and fielding punts. He adjusted to both high and low balls very well. USC's Justin Fargas continued to impress with his speed. He is much faster than any of the other running backs in Mobile. Florida's Earnest Graham did a good job catching the ball.

WR: Florida's Taylor Jacobs displayed speed and explosiveness again this morning. He's getting better as the week goes along. UCF's Doug Gabriel caught the ball more consistently.

OL: Jeremy Bridges, out of Southern Miss, needs to work on his anchor. He struggled with the bull rush and was a little raw on technique. Torrin Tucker, a teammate of Bridges, showed good athleticism. He needs some work on pass-blocking fundamentals Georgia's George Foster was raw, but explosive and powerful today. He's got a ton of ability and just needs to put it all together. Florida State's Montrae Holland was inconsistent this morning. He needs to work on his consistency to be an effective pro. Hawaii's Vince Manuwai is still learning to play from a three-point stance. He had some good plays and bad today. Georgia's Jon Stinchcomb was very athletic. He is just a little light and doesn't look like he can add much weight. Florida State's Brett Williams struggled some with the outside speed rush, but is a tough kid.

DL: Miami's Jerome McDougle showed good athletic ability -- both speed and explosiveness. The key for him is to prove he can do it down after down. Texas A&M's Ty Warren displayed good feet and athletic ability for a big man. He was also powerful and explosive. Miami's Andrew Williams and Jamaal Green both put forth tremendous effort today. Alabama's Jarrett Johnson never stopped. He was always on the go.

DB: Bethune-Cookman's Rashean Mathis had a better day today. He looked more comfortable at safety, showing good awareness. He also caught punts well.

K: Auburn's Damon Duval showed a very powerful leg in punting and field goals. It's hard to judge him because the snaps were very poor.

North squad -- Jan. 15

QB: California's Kyle Boller looked good this afternoon as did Iowa State's Seneca Wallace, who is a bit small, but put nice zip on the ball. Louisville's Dave Ragone was a bit mechanical and held the ball a little long, but showed a strong arm.

WR: Notre Dame's Arnaz Battle was inconsistent. He made some nice plays, but also dropped some balls. Utah State's Kevin Curtis showed good speed. He needs work against press coverage.

TE: Michigan's Bennie Joppru continued to display good smarts -- he knows how to get open. He's not a burner who will beat you deep, but he'll catch the football.

OL: Iowa's Eric Steinbach handled the left tackle position well for never playing the position before. Illinois' Tony Pashos was impressive -- he's just enormous.

LB: None of the linebackers on the North squad did much to impress.

DB: Washington State's Marcus Trufant showed good cover today. He was clearly the class of this group. Both safeties, NC State's Terrence Holt and Utah's Antwoine Sanders, struggled in man-to-man coverage.
