BOX SCORE
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LaBrandon Toefield scored on a 13-yard
run on the first possession of overtime to give LSU a 45-38 victory
over Mississippi State (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) on Saturday night.
| | LSU running back LaBrandon Toefield rushed for 119 yards and two TDs, including the game-winner in OT in Baton Rouge. |
LSU then held Mississippi State on a fourth-and-2 from the 17.
Wayne Madkin tried to scramble for a first down, but was stopped
well short by Jeremy Lawrence and Teverance Faulk.
It was LSU's second overtime win at Tiger Stadium in less than a
month. The Tigers beat Tennessee 38-31 in OT on Sept. 30.
Toefield finished with 119 yards and two touchdowns, as LSU
(5-3, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) gained 220 yards on the ground
against a Mississippi State run defense that entered the game No. 1
in the country, allowing 24 yards per game.
The Bulldogs (4-2, 2-2) forced overtime when Madkin found Justin
Griffith from 3 yards out with 1:59 left to tie it at 38.
Three straight touchdown drives by LSU turned a 14-point deficit
into a 38-31 LSU lead with 4:54 to play.
Domanick Davis scored on two 3-yard runs and Josh Booty hooked
up with Josh Reed for a 20-yard scoring play.
Davis had 79 yards on 12 carries.
Mississippi State finally revived its offense and put together a
drive that had the Bulldogs first-and-goal at the 3. LSU held for
two plays, but on third-and-goal at the 5, Madkin found Justin
Griffith wide open to tie it at 38 with 1:59 left.
Madkin was 12 for 26 for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
Dicenzo Miller scored from 10 yards out with 1:48 left in the
third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 31-17 lead.
It was questionable whether Miller, the Bulldogs' leading
rusher, would play Saturday night after he spent Wednesday and
Thursday in the hospital with a stomach ailment. But Miller ran for
118 yards on 17 carries, his third straight 100-yard game.
In overtime, however, with the crowd of 90,584 blaring, Miller
was stopped for little gain on Mississippi State's first two plays.
A 62-yard drive was capped by Davis, who pushed a pile of
blockers and tacklers into the end zone from 3 yards out to cut the
Bulldogs' lead to 31-24 with 13:56 left in the fourth.
The crowd became deafening on Mississippi State's next
possession, and the inspired LSU defense forced a punt after three
plays.
LSU took over at its own 49, and Davis busted loose for 29 yards
on the first play. Two plays later, Booty found Reed on the left
sideline. Reed shed a tackle inside the 10 and went in for a
touchdown that tied it with 11 minutes left.
Another three-and-out, with the crowd even louder than before,
LSU took over at its own 24. Booty threw just one pass on a
76-yard, 10-play drive that culminated with another 3-yard
touchdown run by Davis to give LSU a 38-31 lead with 5:24 to play.
Booty threw for 246 yards on 24-of-34 passing. Reed had 10
catches for 113 yards, and Reggie Robinson had 10 catches for 102
yards.
LSU beat Mississippi State at Tiger Stadium for the fifth
straight time, and it was the Tigers' eighth win in the last 10
overall against the Bulldogs
Mississippi State took a 7-0 lead on the game's second play from
scrimmage when Madkin hit Terrell Grindle streaking down the left
sideline for an 82-yard touchdown play.
Booty had the LSU offense clicking early, directing touchdown
drives of 64 and 72 yards on the Tigers' first two possessions to
for a 14-7 lead at 3:26 of the first quarter.
Booty completed 8-of-12 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown to
Jerel Myers in the first quarter.
But a 14-yard touchdown run by Dontae Walker tied it, and Scott
Westerfield's 36-yard field goal 13 seconds left in the half gave
the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead.
