SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Jack Hawley threw three touchdown passes and Jonas Lewis rushed for 131 yards to lead San Diego State to a 39-7 victory over Wyoming on Saturday night, ending the Cowboys' slim bowl hopes.
Hawley completed 13-of-23 passes for 232 yards and three
touchdowns to lead an offense that gained 478 total yards,
including 246 on the ground.
Lewis, a senior, moved into second place behind Marshall Faulk
on San Diego State's career rushing list with 2,854 yards. Faulk
gained 4,589 in three seasons.
San Diego State (5-6, 3-4 Mountain West Conference) stymied a
Wyoming offense that averaged 38 points and 502 yards in winning
its last three games. The Cowboys hurt their chances with four
turnovers.
Wyoming (7-4, 4-3 MWC) lost the opportunity to share the
inaugural MWC championship with Brigham Young, Utah and Colorado
State, each of whom finished at 5-2 in conference action.
The Cowboys hoped a share of the MWC title might net them one of
conference's two bowl bids.
San Diego State, which led 15-7 at halftime, took control of the
game when it scored on Hawley's 3-yard pass to J.R. Tolver five
plays into the second half. The touchdown was set up when Tim
Beasley fumbled and the Aztecs recovered at the Cowboys' 8-yard
line.
San Diego State also scored in the second half on Larry Ned's
35-yard run, a 73-yard interception return by Will Demps, and Nate
Tandberg's 32-yard field goal.
Hawley threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Lewis on San
Diego State's first possession.
After Wyoming tied it on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Jay
Stoner to Kofi Shuck, San Diego State used a safety and Hawley's
3-yard TD pass to Jim Ange to take a 15-7 halftime lead.
