  RECAP | BOX SCORE

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Backup quarterback Terrence Levy passed for two touchdowns and sparked a 21 point comeback as the Jaguars beat Grambling St. 37-31 in the Bayou Classic and advanced to the first ever SWAC Championship game.

The Jaguars (10-1) and coach Pete Richardson, who beat the Tigers for a seventh consecutive season, clinched the championship of the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division.

They will meet East Division champion Jackson State in the SWAC title game on Dec. 11 in Birmingham, Ala.

Grambling and second-year coach Doug Williams finished at 7-4.

Southern's Justin Mattingly kicked a 37-yard field goal with 4:53 remaining in the game to break a 31-31 tie and kicked another 37-yard field goal with 36 seconds remaining.

But it was Levy who entered the game in the middle of the third quarter for the injured Troy Williams who picked up the momentum and brought the Jaguars back from a 31-10 deficit.

Levy replaced Williams, who left with a leg injury, during an 88-yard drive as Dain Lewis' seven-yard touchdown run cut the deficit to 31-17 with 6:19 left in the third quarter.

Levy then threw a touchdown pass to Torry Ingram on third-and-goal from the Tigers' 23 early in the fourth quarter on another drive.

On the first play of Grambling's next drive, Southern defensive end Gillis Wilson sacked Tiger quarterback Lionel Hayes and forced a fumble. Richard Scott recovered for the Jaguars at the Tigers' nine-yard line.

Levy threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Michael Hayes to tie the score at 31 with 13:43 remaining. He completed 11 of 15 for 139 yards and no interceptions on the day.

Southern had been trailing since the first quarter.

After Mattingly's second field goal, the Jaguars never trailed again.

Grambling scored five touchdowns and led at halftime 31-10 despite four failed conversion tries, but the Tiger offense never duplicated those efforts in the second half.

The Tigers, who rushed 22 times for minus 65 yards, abandoned the running game early in the game.

Hayes completed 24 of 52 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns -- all of which came in the first half.

He threw to six different receivers but Levy Washington was his primary target with 11 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Randy Hymes caught 4 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns to add to the Tiger attack.

In the second half, Hayes never got the Tiger offense going.

Grambling kicker Lawrence Richmond missed three extra point attempts and a 19-yard field goal in the first quarter. He made one extra point in the game, but the Tigers failed on another conversion try when a trick pass-play from kicking formation failed.
