Aztecs stop slide, beat UNLV 37-7

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Jonas Lewis rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown to lead San Diego State to a 37-7 victory over UNLV on Saturday in the Mountain West Conference.

The victory ended a two-game losing streak for the Aztecs (4-6, 2-4.) The Rebels (3-7, 1-5) started 2-0 under first-year coach John Robinson, but have since dropped seven of their last eight, including four straight.

Larry Ned added 75 yards as the Aztecs outgained UNLV 274 yards to 77 on the ground. San Diego State amassed 501 yards of total offense, averaging 6.8 yards per play.

Jack Hawley passed for 208 yards, completing 10 of 18 attempts for San Diego State.

Freshman Matt Ray hit 10 of 20 passes for 138 yards for the Rebels.

San Diego State scored on a safety when Mark Chlumak tackled UNLV running back Jeremi Rudolph in the end zone in the first quarter.

The first play after UNLV's free kick that pinned the Aztecs back at their own 13, Hawley connected with Derrick Lewis for an 87-yard touchdown pass.

Late in the first quarter, Ray hit Duane James for a 16-yard touchdown pass to cut the Aztecs lead to 9-7. The pass capped a five-play, 26-yard drive set up when the Rebels' Dalton Ross blocked a San Diego State punt at the 26.

San Diego State added two more touchdowns in the second half to extend its lead to 23-7. Hawley hit J.R. Tolver on a 14-yard pass and Ned scored on a 1-yard run.

Ned added a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Lewis scored from six yards out in the fourth.
