COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- LaMont Jordan ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns and Maryland forced seven turnovers Saturday in handing North Carolina its worst loss in 10 years, 45-7.

Marlon Moore returned an interception 51 yards for a score in a 24-point first quarter, and Maryland matched its largest victory margin in a series that began in 1920. The Terrapins (5-2, 2-2 ACC) had lost three straight and eight of nine to North Carolina.

The defeat assured the Tar Heels (1-6, 0-5) their first losing season since 1989. That was also the last time North Carolina lost as many as five in a row.

The Tar Heels lost four fumbles and threw three interceptions in their most lopsided loss since a 41-0 setback against Duke in 1989.

While North Carolina no longer has a chance to secure its eighth straight bowl bid, Maryland enhanced its bid to play in the postseason for the first time since 1990. The Terrapins have already matched their win total in the past two seasons combined.

Jordan, a junior, was removed late in the period after moving past Rick Badanjek into third place on the school's career rushing list. He averaged 5.7 yards on 26 carries.

It became apparent quite early that North Carolina was going to be fighting itself as well as the Terrapins.

Brian Kopka kicked a 39-yard field goal on Maryland's first possession, a drive extended by a roughing-the-kicker penalty after the Terrapins faced fourth down on their own 32.

The Tar Heels made an even costlier mistake on their first drive. Freshman Luke Huard tried to hit Kory Bailey on a third-down play, but Moore picked off the pass and went untouched into the end zone.

Sam Aiken fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Maryland's Rod Littles recovered at the 11. Two plays later, Calvin McCall hit Eric James over the middle for a 17-yard touchdown to make it 17-0.

Littles then pounced on an onsides kick, but the Terrapins had to punt. After the Tar Heels lost yardage on three straight plays and punted, Maryland went up 24-0 when Matt Kalapinski concluded a 34-yard drive with a 2-yard run.

North Carolina coach Carl Torbush then switched to quarterback Antwon Black, but the results were no different. Black threw two interceptions in the second quarter, and the second one set up an 11-yard TD run by Jordan 47 seconds before halftime.

The Tar Heels fumbled six times in the first half, losing three, and threw three interceptions. Maryland entered the game with a plus-1.67 turnover ratio, third-best in the nation.

Jordan and Kalapinski both scored on 6-yard runs in the third quarter to make it 45-0. Rufus Brown broke the shutout with a 3-yard touchdown run with 8:25 remaining.
