SEATTLE (AP) -- After what Bruce Snyder and the disappointed Arizona State Sun Devils have been through this season, they needed that one.

Ryan Kealy passed for two touchdowns in the second half and the Sun Devils took advantage of six lost fumbles by Washington for a 28-7 victory in a Pac-10 game on Saturday.

Arizona State (3-3 overall, 2-1 Pac-10) bounced back after being beaten 48-17 at Notre Dame last week. The Sun Devils lost to New Mexico State 35-7 in a major upset in their second game. A year ago, when they were billed as national title contenders, the Sun Devils finished 5-6.

"When you're struggling, it's very difficult to show emotion," said Snyder, Arizona State's eight-year coach. "You become worried and stressed. But this team really wants to do well. We want to get a good feeling again at home with our fans."

Kealy, who hadn't finished a game this season because of injuries, had scoring passes of 3 yards to tight end Kendrick Bates and 24 yards to Tariq McDonald to break open a tight game.

"I think our confidence level grew as the game went on," Kealy said. "We came out in the second half and had some early successes and just ran with it."

The Sun Devils ended a three-game winning streak for the Huskies (3-3, 2-1) and stopped a four-game losing streak in Seattle.

Despite its mediocre first half of the season, the Sun Devils still believe they're in the Rose Bowl picture.

"We're a funny league this year, really strange," Snyder said. "Two losses and you're outside looking in and I don't want to be out."

Arizona State's defense stymied quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo and Washington's option attack after the Huskies took the game's opening kickoff and drove 87 yards for their only touchdown. Washington was held to its lowest scoring total in a home game since a 17-6 loss to Washington State in 1983 at Husky Stadium.

"We didn't come ready to play four quarters," said Tuiasosopo. "We only came ready to play one drive. That was it."

Said Washington's Chris Juergens, who caught eight passes for 105 yards: "We shot ourselves in the foot."

Solomon Bates, Arizona State's tough 17-year-old freshman middle linebacker, had a team-leading 11 tackles, including three tackles for loss. He forced a fumble.

"Their (offensive) linemen started making a lot of mistakes," he said. "I think we broke them down, killed their spirit."

The Sun Devils stopped the Huskies at their 1 on a fourth-down run attempt by Willie Hurst with 5:02 left in the third quarter.

Kealy completed 15 of 28 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions, becoming the sixth quarterback at Arizona State to pass for 5,000 yards in his career. He joined an elite group that includes Jake Plummer, Danny White, Jeff Van Raaphorst, Paul Justin and Mike Pagel.

Tuiasosopo was 19-for-26 for 206 yards and no interceptions but did lose two fumbles. He was sacked five times.

Arizona State turned Washington's fifth lost fumble into a touchdown in the first minute of the fourth quarter for a 28-7 lead. Hurst lost his second fumble of the day on a vicious hit by Alfred Williams and the ball was recovered by Kareem Clark at the Washington 24. Hurst was knocked out of the game with a concussion.

On the next play, Kealy passed to McDonald at the goal line for a touchdown with 47 seconds gone in the fourth quarter.

The Sun Devils turned a fumble by punt returner Joe Jarzynka into a 22-yard field goal by Stephen Baker with 3:14 gone in the second half for a 13-7 lead. Jarzynka's fumble gave Arizona State the ball on the Washington 20.

Arizona State then took a 21-7 lead with its second touchdown of the game with eight seconds to go in the third quarter.

After Quincy Yancy blocked John Anderson's 46-yard field goal attempt, the Sun Devils drove 47 yards in seven plays before Kealy's 3-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bates on the next-to-last play of the third quarter. Kealy passed to Todd Heap for a 2-point conversion.

Arizona State led 10-7 at halftime as the Huskies lost three fumbles in the second quarter.

Washington took a 7-0 lead with 4:32 gone on Tuiasosopo's 23-yard scramble.

The Sun Devils tied it on the first play of the second period on a 10-yard run by fullback Terrelle Smith.

Bates' hit on Hurst caused a fumble that Jawell Samilton recovered at the Sun Devils 40. Arizona State drove 51 yards for Baker's 27-yard field goal at 8:36 of the second quarter.

Hurst had 66 yards on 19 carries before being knocked out of the game, while J.R. Redmond, Arizona State's stellar tailback who was playing with a sprained left shoulder, had 33 yards on a dozen carries.

Braxton Cleman, Washington's No. 2 tailback, was taken to University Hospital on the Washington campus after being injured late in the game. His injury was diagnosed as a bruised lung.
