FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Tomlinson rushed for 300 yards, including touchdown runs of 89 and 74 yards, as TCU beat San Jose State 42-0 Saturday afternoon.

Tomlinson had 247 yards on 12 carries by halftime, helping the Horned Frogs (2-3 overall, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) coast to a 35-0 halftime lead over the Spartans.

The tailback, who finished with 23 carries, entered the game as the WAC's second-leading rusher behind San Jose State's Deonce Whitaker, but easily overtook Whitaker after his dominating performance.

Whitaker, recovering from an ankle injury that sidelined him in the Spartans' victory over Stanford last week, left the game in the second quarter and didn't return. He finished with five carries for seven yards.

TCU drove 43 yards in five plays on its first possession, with a 5-yard touchdown run by fullback George Layne giving the Horned Frogs a 7-0 lead.

San Jose State appeared to seize some momentum late in the first quarter after TCU's LaVar Veale mistakenly fielded a punt at the TCU goal line and only returned it six yards. A five-yard facemask penalty moved the ball to the TCU 11.

On the next play, Tomlinson sprinted 89 yards down the right sideline for his first touchdown of the game.

TCU's stingy defense limited the Spartans' offense to 86 yards in the first half, with Chris Kasteler completing only six passes out of 25 attempts for 53 yards.

The Spartans failed to get on the scoreboard in the second half and finished the game with 246 yards, even with the Horned Frogs' second-team defense on the field for most of the fourth quarter.

San Jose State entered Saturday's game with the nation's ninth-ranked offense, averaging 462 yards.
