TROY, Ala. (AP) _ Phillip Jones rushed for 72 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run as Troy State defeated Northwestern State 24-21 Saturday night. The Trojans (5-0, 1-0 Southland Football League) capitalized on five Demon turnovers and outgained Northwestern State (2-4, 1-1) 352-179. Along the way, Troy State also overcame three critical fumbles and 15 penalties for 174 yards. With Northwestern State leading 21-17, the Trojans drove 54 yards in six plays to set up Jones' TD with 10:26 remaining in the fourth quarter. Northwestern State was unable to score on its next possession, and Troy State ran the clock out. The Trojans also got touchdowns from Wayne Thomas, on a 2-yard run, and on Brock Nutter's 66-yard pass to Mareno Philyaw. Lawrence Tynes had a 22-yard field goal in the first half. Northwestern State's Mike Green returned a blocked punt late in the second quarter to put the Demons up 21-17 at halftime. Troy State rolled up 130 yards rushing and 222 yards passing, while holding Northwestern State to just 44 yards rushing.
