CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Duke forced overtime with a bizarre touchdown pass from one wide receiver to another Saturday, and Spencer Romine's 7-yard toss to Benjamin Watson in the second extra period gave the Blue Devils a 24-17 victory over Virginia.

After a 3-yard run by Thomas Jones gave the Cavaliers (3-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 17-10 lead with 1:24 left, Duke drove to the Virginia 9. Romaine pitched to Letavious Wilks, who fumbled when hit by linebacker Byron Thweat.

Wideout Scottie Montgomery scooped up the loose ball and heaved it across the field to Richmond Flowers for the tying touchdown with 6 seconds left.

Virginia had the ball first in overtime, but Todd Braverman missed a 43-yard field goal attempt. The Cavaliers got new life when Duke's Sims Lenhardt, who had missed his first field goal in 10 tries this year earlier in the game, shanked a 35-yarder.

After Romine's scoring pass to Watson in the second overtime, Virgina appeared to answer when Dan Ellis hit Ahmad Hawkins in the corner of the end zone from 25 yards out. However, the catch was ruled out of bounds. Two plays later, Lamar Grant intercepted an Ellis pass to give Duke (1-4, 1-2 ACC) its first victory at Virginia since 1981.

Jones, who rushed 31 times for 185 yards, scored the game's first points on a 48-yard run with 12:12 remaining in the third quarter.

But a mishandled snap by Virginia punter Donnie Scott gave Duke the ball on the Cavaliers' 11, and Wilks punched it in from 1 yard out with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter to even the score.

Virginia regained the lead on the final play of the third quarter with a 26-yard Braverman field goal, then missed an opportunity to widen the lead. After Tim Spruill blocked a punt at the 35 with 13:13 left, Virginia marched to the 14 only to lose possession on a Jones fumble.

Nine plays and 75 yards later -- including a 50-yard completion to Montgomery -- Lenhardt tied it with a 31-yard field goal.
