EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- In a battle of unbeatens and a clash of the only two schools with two wins in the Big Ten Conference, No. 3 Michigan battles 11th-ranked Michigan State. The Wolverines (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) have won three straight games against Michigan State (5-0, 2-0) to take a 60-26-5 lead in the all-time series. They are 6-3 against Michigan State in the 1990s and 14-9-1 at Spartan Stadium. "These are two great football programs at two great institutions in the state of Michigan, and it's a terrific situation where we are both going into this game undefeated," said Spartans coach Nick Saban. "In addition to being a traditional rivalry, the game has added significance this year because we are both in the Big Ten race." With a then-NCAA record crowd of 111,238 looking on in Ann Arbor, Michigan emerged with a 29-17 victory behind 208 yards passing yards from Tom Brady, who threw for a touchdown while running for another score. Michigan's defense controlled the game in the second half, sacking Bill Burke five times and holding Michigan State to a meager 88 yards. Expect things to be different this season. The Spartans have averaged 423 yards per offense to rank 26th in the nation and have enough weapons to move the ball against the Wolverines' 22nd-ranked defense. Burke has completed 57 percent of his passes for 909 yards and 11 touchdowns, choosing from among Plaxico Burress, tight end Chris Baker and Gari Scott. At 6-6, Burress should present problems for Michigan's secondary. On the ground, Lloyd Clemons and T.J. Duckett have combined for 658 yards and three touchdowns. For Michigan, Brady and running back Anthony Thomas, nicknamed "A-Train," will be tested by a Spartans defense that ranks first in the nation against the run and 11th overall. The Spartans have not allowed a rushing touchdown through the first five games of the season, marking the first time they have gone this long without surrendering one since joining the Big Ten in 1953. Michigan State features stars in each unit of the defense. End Robaire Smith has four sacks, linebacker Julian Peterson ranks second on the team with 38 tackles and the cornerback tandem of Ranaldo Hill and Amp Campbell rivals Ohio State's Ahmed Plummer and David Mitchell as the league's best. "Tom Brady has really played well for them and obviously played very well last week against Purdue," Saban said. "David Terrell and Marcus Knight are exceptionally good receivers who can make big plays. Anthony Thomas is an outstanding runner with a lot of experience. He's a big, powerful guy with some speed who gave us some problems last year." Thomas rushed for 97 yards on just 13 carries in last season's game.
