PITTSBURGH (AP) _ John Turman threw four touchdown passes in less than three quarters and a pair of Pittsburgh interceptions led to two touchdowns in two minutes in a 55-24 rout of winless Temple on Saturday.

Kevan Barlow scored on a 50-yard pass play and a 1-yard run on Pitt's first three possessions and rushed for 84 yards as the Panthers (3-1, 1-0 in Big East) beat Temple (0-5, 0-1) for the first time since 1996.

Temple has been outscored 160-39 this season and has seven victories since 1995, but had won two straight and three of four from Pittsburgh. Pitt went 0-7 in the conference last year.

The Panthers already are assured of a better record than last season, when they were 2-9 and beat only one NCAA Division I-A opponent. They also started 3-1 in 1997 before finishing 6-6.

Turman, chosen as Pitt's starter only last week, was 10-of-13 for 196 yards before leaving with 2:25 left in the third quarter of a rare blowout in a series that has featured comebacks and close games during the 1990s.

Turman hit Latef Grim for a 16-yard touchdown to complete a quick 62-yard drive on Pitt's first possession. After Barlow scored from the 1 on Pitt's next drive, Turman ducked a blitz to find a wide-open Barlow downfield for a 50-yard score that put Pittsburgh ahead 21-10 early in the second quarter.

Pitt later took over at Temple's 28 following the first of consecutive short punts by George Radu, and Turman found Antonio Bryant one play later for a 27-yard touchdown that made it 28-10.

Last year, the Owls trailed 20-0 before quarterback Mac DeVito came off the bench to lead a rally and a 33-32 Owls' victory in Pittsburgh. DeVito again came on in the third quarter Saturday after starter Devin Scott was hurt, but was intercepted three times _ twice in a span of four passes.

The first interception, by Hank Poteat, stopped a potential Owls scoring drive set by Fulton Fryar's interception and led to Turman's 22-yard touchdown pass to Kirk McMullen.

On Temple's next drive, Nick Cole stepped in front of a DeVito pass and returned it 34 yards for his first career interception and first touchdown to put Pitt up 42-10.

Freshman Torrie Cox had a 3-yard touchdown run and Poteat had a 69-yard punt return in the fourth quarter as Pitt scored more than 50 points against Temple for the second time in four years. The Panthers rallied from a 19-point deficit with 7 1/2 minutes left to win 53-52 in 1996.

The Owls' 24 points were a season high _ they have been shut out three times _ but they again couldn't stop the run. Temple has been outrushed 1,222-331 in five games, with Pitt holding a 166-20 edge Saturday.

Pittsburgh has only four days off before playing No. 22 Syracuse (4-1) at home Thursday night.
