The Aggies' lone score came midway through the second quarter when defensive end Lyn Perryman stepped in front of a pass intended for Duan Ruff in the left flat and returned the interception 22 yards for a TD. The Rams' defense sacked New Mexico State quarterback K.C. Enzminger five times and intercepted three of his passes. Safety Erik Olson returned one theft 35 yards for a third-quarter touchdown. Colorado State's leading rusher Kevin McDougal saw limited action because of a lingering injury to his adductor muscle, but the Rams didn't miss him. Sanders, who started at tailback in place of McDougal, dashed 44 yards for a touchdown on the Rams' second play from scrimmage, and he finished with 106 yards rushing. Sapp, on his the first carry of his collegiate career, ran 32 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown. Late in the first quarter, after Deone Horinek's punt was downed at the New Mexico State 3-yard line, Enzminger was sacked in the end zone by Pollard for a safety. On the first play of the second quarter, Newton, after executing a fake to the right side, threw a 27-yard TD pass to Pete Rebstock in the left corner of the end zone. McDougal's 16-yard run set up Newton's 4-yard TD pass to Cory Woolstenhulme with 10:34 left in the half. Hurst kicked a 47-yarder _ the longest of his career _ with 2:38 left, and then bettered it with a 54-yarder on the final play of the half.
