MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ Quarterback Brian Broadwater rushed for three touchdowns and Tim Shubzda kicked a 29-yard field goal with 2:53 left Saturday, giving Navy a 31-28 victory over West Virginia.

Navy (2-3) last played at Mountaineer Field in 1963 during Roger Staubach's Heisman Trophy season. On Saturday, it was Broadwater who looked like a leader.

The junior engineered four 80-yard scoring drives against a defense that ranks next-to-last in the Big East.

Broadwater rushed for 110 yards on 23 carries to eclipse the 100-yard mark for the third time this season. Dre Brittingham had 124 yards on 12 carries as the nation's fourth-best rushing offense amassed 388 yards.

West Virginia quarterback Brad Lewis, a sophomore making his first start in place of injured Marc Bulger, combined with tight end Anthony Becht for their second touchdown of the day, a 2-yarder, to tie the game 28-28 early in the fourth quarter.

Broadwater, who hurt his right elbow in the first quarter, was hit by linebacker Barrett Green with 9:43 left and stayed on the ground for a few minutes. But he returned for the next series and took Navy 65 yards in 11 plays to set up the go-ahead field goal.

West Virginia got the ball back on its 27 with 2:44 left. Lewis' pass was intercepted by Gary Lane on the third play of the drive, but Navy was called for roughing the passer, giving the Mountaineers a first down at the Navy 45.

Lewis, who was 17-of-31 for 172 yards, couldn't capitalize. His pass was intercepted five plays later by Chris LePore at the Navy 26, and the Midshipmen ran out the clock.

West Virginia is 1-4 for the first time since 1994. All four losses have come against teams specializing in the option offense.

Navy held the ball for more than 36 minutes. Its defense held West Virginia to 92 yards rushing.
