BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) _ Sharnard Smith returned a fumble 81 yards for a touchdown with 3:43 left to lift Elon to a 20-16 win over New Haven Saturday.

The Chargers (3-2) took a 16-14 lead with 9:02 left when Jason Barnett tossed a 32-yard touchdown to Diallo Freeman. New Haven was driving again before Corey Jones fumbled at the Elon 19, setting up Smith's return.

Elon (5-0) built a 14-0 second quarter lead on a 24-yard run by Daren Bethea and a 41-yard touchdown pass from Derrick Moore to Travis Whitaker.

New Haven came back on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ketric Barnes with 39 seconds before halftime.

Elon were held to 201 yards rushing after averaging 325 rushing yards a game.
