BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Kevin Chartrand threw for 73 yards, ran for another 22 and scored twice to lead Marist College to a 49-7 win over Canisius College Saturday in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Chartrand took the opening kickoff and drove 59 yards in nine plays for an early lead, taking the ball in from 16 yards on a bootleg around right end.

Canisius came back with a 65 yard drive to tie the score after Frank Corigliano's 1-yard run.

Marist's Rommel Sumaque took the kickoff 61 yards to the Canisius 32-yard line. Seven plays later, Miguel Reyes ran in from the 5-yard line.

Early in the second quarter Marist defensive back Anthony Pesce blocked Rich Birkenhead's punt out of the end zone for a safety that gave the Red Foxes a 16-7 lead.

Soon after, Brett Biggs hit a 42-yard field, a school record.

Bassell Nelson's interception of a Canisius pass with 2:26 left in the half set up Biggs' second field goal, this one from 26 yards.

Marist, however, would score again off a turnover. Tom Lennon intercepted a second pass by Mark Nachreiner and Sumaque scored from the 1-yard line with just over a minute left in the half.

In the second half Marist ground out a 75-yard drive to go ahead 36-7.

Marist's Joe Macchia returned a third interception of Nachreiner and ran it 65 yards for a touchdown.
