KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) _ Tim Lester threw four touchdown passes and Western Michigan's defense dominated in a 38-16 win over Central Michigan on Saturday night.

Western (3-2, 2-0) remained in first place in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference before 36,102 at Waldo Stadium, a conference record.

Central (1-4, 1-2) had just 155 yards of total offense through the first three quarters, then added 167 in the fourth.

The Broncos finished with 376 yards in total offense, with Lester completing 22 of 39 passes for 297 yards. His two second-half scoring strikes were to Corey Alston, a 72-yarder in the third quarter and a 20-yard fade pass in the fourth quarter.

Lester's first two TD passes helped Western take a 17-3 halftime lead. He connected with tight end Jake Moreland on a 2-yard pass, then hit Kendrick Mosely on a 21-yard pass.

Broncos tailback Robert Sanford capped the scoring with a 21-yard TD run in the game's final minutes. He finished with 86 yards on 20 carries.

Sanford's run was set up on a bizarre interception by Terrance Moore, who picked a bobbled pass off the back of Central receiver Jammarl O'Neal as he lay on the ground.

Darvin Willis intercepted a deflected Lester pass to set up the first Chippewas' touchdown. Quarterback Pete Shepherd connected with O'Neal on a 12-yard scoring play.

Central's second score came on an Eric Flowers 2-yard TD run.
