BOX SCORE
PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) -- Washington State snapped a school-record 12-game losing streak as Steve Birnbaum threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score in a 34-7 victory over Pac-10 Conference foe California. The Cougars (1-4, 1-2 Pac-10) had not won since September 19 of last season, when they defeated Idaho, 24-16. They closed the year with an eight-game skid. Washington State also won for the first time in 11 conference games and improved to 22-36-5 all-time against California. The Bears (2-2, 1-1) suffered their second pounding of the season, three weeks after losing 45-0 to fifth-ranked Nebraska, while managing only 174 yards of total offense. Birnbaum threw an 18-yard TD pass to Collin Henderson 5:15 into the second quarter and added a one-yard scoring run 3 1/2 minutes later as the Cougars went ahead 17-0. With Washington State leading 17-7, Birnbaum found Marcus Williams from 10 yards out to cap a 16-play, 96-yard drive 5 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter. Birnbaum, a senior, completed 23-of-38 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Deon Burnett carried 25 times for 104 yards and reached the end zone on a 24-yard run to cap the scoring with 2 1/2 minutes to play. Rian Lindell kicked a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter. Defensive tackle Jacob Waasdorp scored the Bears' only points on a 25-yard return of a fumble 76 seconds into the second half. Freshman quarterback Kyle Boller, who guided Cal to a 24-23 win over Arizona State last week in his first start, was just 13-of-33 for 116 yards with an interception. The Bears totaled only 58 yards on 35 carries.
