RENO, Nev. (AP) - Derrick Ward rushed for 176 yards and two
touchdowns and Billy Volek passed for three scores as Fresno State
defeated Nevada 49-24 Saturday.
Ward scored on runs of 86 and 2 yards and also blocked a punt,
resulting in another touchdown, in the first quarter as Fresno
State (2-2) took a 20-0 lead 10:01 into the game.
Volek was 16-of-23 for 199 yards. Nevada's David Neill passed
for 376 yards, Trevor Insley caught 12 passes for 205 yards and
Chris Lemon ran for 101 yards and two scores.
After forcing Nevada (0-4) to punt on the game's opening series,
Fresno State drove 40 yards in seven plays, taking a 7-0 lead on
Ward's 2-yard run with 9:50 left in the first quarter.
Ward blocked Norm Brady's punt and Rodney Wright returned it 10
yards for a TD and a 14-0 lead with 7:49 left.
The Bulldogs made it 20-0 with 4:59 left in the quarter as Ward
bounced out of a pileup at the line of scrimmage and ran 86 yards
for a touchdown.
