AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ Brandon Payne ran for two touchdowns and 156 yards to lead Akron past winless Temple 25-15 Saturday.

Akron (2-1) went ahead 25-0 by halftime, then withstood Temple's surge in the fourth quarter. The Owls (0-3) were scoreless through 11 quarters this season before producing two touchdowns.

Payne, who had 25 carries, paced a strong Akron ground game that produced 318 yards.

Temple quarterback Mac Devito capped the game's longest drive, a 16-play, 80-yard effort, with a 2-yard run. He also connected with Sean Dillard on a 43-yard scoring pass.

The only scoring in the first quarter was a safety that came when a snap went over the head of Temple punter Garvin Ringwelski and out of the end zone.

Jimmie Gray's 22-yard run gave the Zips their first touchdown. Payne had a 6-yard scoring run, Zac Derr kicked a 24-yard field goal and Payne scored on a 33-yard run.
