BOX SCORE KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) _ Giovanni Carmazzi threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Hofstra over Rhode Island 28-13 Saturday. Jimmy Jones added 94 yards, including a 51-yard scoring run, for Hofstra (3-0), which entered the game ranked 7th in 1-AA. Both touchdowns for Rhode Island (0-2) came on passes from Ken Mastrole to Matt Birkett, a 5-yarder in the second quarter and an 8-yarder in the fourth quarter. A heavy underdog, Rhode Island outplayed Hofstra for portions of the game, but made some key errors, including a missed extra point and two costly fumbles. Trailing 14-7 just before halftime, Rhode Island skipped a field-goal try in favor of a fourth-and-3 touchdown attempt. Mastrole, who was sacked six times and harassed all afternoon, threw an incompletion. Then, trailing 21-13 midway through the fourth quarter, head coach Floyd Keith decided to punt on fourth-and-7 from the Hofstra 30. Hofstra quickly scored. Carmazzi, a pro prospect who holds numerous school passing records, threw two interceptions in addition to his scoring passes to Kahmal Roy and Steve Jackson.
