ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Roy Johnson ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and No. 12 Hampton (Va.) blocked two field goals in a 26-13 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday at the Gateway Classic.

Hampton, appearing in the St. Louis game for the fifth time, improved to 3-0 in Division I-AA while Pine Bluff lost in the Classic for the third consecutive year, dropping to 1-2.

Johnson completed 12 of 21 passes for 280 yards. His 76-yard completion to Michael Compton set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Johnson for the game's first score. Johnson also connected with Warren Broughton late in the second quarter for a 53-yard touchdown.

``Sometimes they say it takes a little luck,'' Johnson said, ``and I think we had a little luck on our side today.''

Pine Bluff kicker Richard Pena had field goals of 26 and 40 yards blocked in the second quarter and also missed a 42-yard attempt in the first.

Hampton defensive end Gregory Scott had a key interception in the third quarter, which he returned seven yards to the Pine Bluff 18-yard-line. Six plays later, Compton made a diving touchdown catch on a deflected pass.

``When you play hard, you create those kind of situations,'' Hampton coach Joe Taylor said. ``I always tell these guys, `we're not going to make any big plays, but that's OK as long as we make enough plays.'''

The final blow for Pine Bluff came when Rashad Muhyee ended the Golden Lions' threat with an interception after the ball bounced off the head of receiver Kevin Soward.
