PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (AP) _ Gavin Hoffman threw for 196 yards and a touchdown, and Kris Ryan ran 48 yards for another score to give Pennsylvania a 17-6 win over Dartmouth in the Ivy League season opener for both teams Saturday.

Ryan, a sophomore, took a handoff from Hoffmann, broke free of several Dartmouth tacklers, then raced down the right sideline for the first touchdown of his career to give Penn a 10-0 lead.

The Quakers (1-0, 1-0) increased the lead to 17-0 after Hoffmann connected with Ben Zagorski on a 17-yard touchdown pass at 5:56 of the third quarter. It was Hoffmann's first game at Penn since transferring from Northwestern.

The Big Green (0-1, 0-1) were held off the scoreboard until 28 seconds left in the game, when Greg Smith found Lee Roach over the middle for an 18-yard scoring pass.

Ryan led all rushers with 99 yards on 15 carries. Hoffmann was 23-of-36 passing but was intercepted twice.

The Quakers held Dartmouth to just 84 passing yards.
