MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Teofilo Riley rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night to lead Memphis to a 31-26 victory over Arkansas State.

Riley's scores came on second half runs of 3 and 2 yards, the final giving the Tigers (1-2) a 31-13 lead with 8:41 remaining.

But Arkansas State (0-3) scored twice in the final six minutes to cut the lead to five points. A missed two-point conversion and Memphis' recovery of the ensuing onside kick with about 1 1/2 minutes left preserved the Tigers' first victory of the season after a pair of 3-point losses to Mississippi and Mississippi State.

The victory meant a resurrection of the Memphis offense which sputtered in the first two games.

The Tigers finished with 415 yards of offense, while the Indians had 298. Memphis running back Jeff Sanders had 94 yards rushing.

Memphis held a 10-3 lead at the half on a 1-yard run by reserve quarterback Travis Anglin and a 37-yard field goal by Ryan White near the end of the half.

But the Tigers opened the second half by trying to give the game away.

On the first play from scrimmage after the second-half kickoff, Sanders fumbled. The Indians' J.C. Miller recovered at the Memphis 19, and running back Lamont Zachery scored on the next play to tie the game 10-10.

The Indians took the lead 13-10 on their next series on Nick Gatto's 33-yard field goal.

Memphis then scored on its next three series, including Riley's touchdowns and a 32-yard pass from Anglin to Damien Dodson. Riley's second score gave Memphis a 31-13 lead with 8:41 left in the game.

Arkansas State scored in the fourth quarter Cleo Lemon's 34-yard TD pass to Jamie Hickenbotham and a 5-yard TD pass to Robert Kilow.
