CINCINNATI (AP) _ Brock Nutter passed for two touchdowns and Kovey Jones returned an interception 39 yards to lead Troy State to a 31-24 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday night. Nutter was 13-of-24 for 219 yards, and Al Lucas scored on a 1-yard run for the Trojans (1-0). Phillip Jones rushed 19 times for 102 yards. Deontey Kenner completed 26-of-50, threw two TD passes and ran 1 yard for another score for Cincinnati (1-1). After a 28-yard field goal by Jonathan Ruffin, Troy State took a 10-7 lead on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Nutter to Jonathan Carter. Kenner answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass to P.J. Mays. But Troy State took the lead for good on Carter's second touchdown reception, a 43-yarder from Nutter. After a 37-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes and Lucas' touchdown, Cincinnati narrowed the lead to 24-17 on Kenner's 1-yard run. But Kovey Jones stopped Cincinnati's attempt to tie the game by intercepting a pass from Kenner and returning it 39 yards for a touchdown with 1:05 to play. Cincinnati capped a 64-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Kenner to Tony Smikle with 17 seconds left, but was unable to recover an onside kick and Troy State ran out the clock.
