NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Patrick Ramsey passed for a school-record 404 yards and three touchdowns, and JaJuan Dawson set another school mark with 16 catches for 218 yards as Tulane beat SMU 53-19 Saturday.

Adrian Burnette caught all three touchdown passes, finishing with nine catches for 136 yards for Tulane (1-1). Toney Converse rushed for 90 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.

Ramsey completed 32 of 49 passes in three quarters. Johnnie Freeman rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown on seven carries for SMU (0-2).

Tulane had a 16-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Glenn Lemoine blocked a punt by the Mustangs' Colin Vadheim, and Mitch Mouton picked up the ball and ran 11 yards for a touchdown.

Brendam McGraw mishandled the following kickoff one yard inside his end zone and the ball bounced to the 1-yard line. SMU's Jeff Woods grabbed the ball and knelt in the end zone, apparently hoping for a touchback but giving Tulane a safety and a 9-0 lead.

On Tulane's first play after the free kick, Ramsey passed to Dawson for a 60-yard gain to the Mustangs' 6-yard line. Then Ramsey passed to Burnette for a touchdown, giving the Green Wave a 16-0 lead with 12:03 left in the first quarter.

Ramsey and Burnette hooked up again for a 26-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 23-0 with 7:18 left in the first quarter.

SMU scored on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Josh McCown to Cody Cardwell, but Tulane responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by Converse to make the score 29-6 early in the second quarter. A 61-yard touchdown run by Freeman on his first collegiate carry cut Tulane's lead to 29-12.

On the first possession of the second half, the Green Wave drove 80 yards for a touchdown. Ramsey's 8-yard scoring pass to Burnette made the score 36-12. Less than two minutes later Converse sprinted 53 yards for a touchdown and a 43-12 edge.

SMU scored on a 38-yard TD pass from reserve quarterback Kelan Luker to Chris Cunningham, and Tulane's Seth Marler kicked a 29-yard field goal to make the score 46-19 with 4:07 left in the third quarter.

Converse then ran one yard for the game's final touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
