BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) _ Each time North Carolina needed yards, Ronald Curry came up with a big play and Indiana came up with a big mistake.

Curry ran for one touchdown and passed for 241 yards and two TDs, and the Tar Heels survived some costly penalties to beat Indiana 42-30 Saturday night.

North Carolina (1-1) scored on three straight possessions in the second half, each time following big defensive breakdowns by the Hoosiers (1-1).

The Tar Heels led only 21-16 at halftime but kept one second-half drive going with a pass interference penalty on Indiana, a 13-yard run by Curry and a 25-yard TD pass play to Jason Peace after a missed tackle at the 10. On North Carolina's next possession, Curry completed a 34-yard pass to Alge Crumpler, setting up an 8-yard touchdown run by Anthony Saunders.

Indiana, which earlier scored on a 1-yard run by Antwaan Randle El, closed to 35-30 on a 22-yard pass from Randle El to Jerry Dorsey, both scores set up by North Carolina personal fouls.

But the Hoosiers still couldn't stop Curry, who was faced with a third-and-18 play but completed a 19-yard pass to Peace at the Indiana 34. Five plays later, he passed 11 yards to Dauntee Finger, who used another botched tackle by the Hoosiers to score the final TD with 5:56 to go.

Indiana's last threat ended on downs at the North Carolina 33 with 3:29 remaining.

While the defense struggled the entire game, the Hoosiers had some unexpected yardage from sophomore Levron Williams, who repeatedly took the ball on option pitches from Randle El and swept to the outside around Carolina's defense.

Williams finished with a career-high 168 yards _ almost double his previous career total _ and set up Randle El's third-quarter TD with a 27-yard gain on an option pitch.

Late in the first quarter, after the first of Ronnie Robinson's two touchdowns gave the Tar Heels a 7-3 lead, Williams ran three times, including one for 25 yards to the North Carolina 15. On the next play, he took another pitch from Randle El and ran to the right into the end zone for a touchdown and a 10-7 Indiana lead.

North Carolina struck on the next possession with a 38-yard run by Daniel Davis and a 19-yard pass to Crumpler to the Indiana 13. Two plays later, the Tar Heels were at the 1, where the Hoosiers twice held for no gain before Curry ran untouched to his right into the end zone on the second play of the second quarter.

Curry ran 12 yards and completed three straight passes on the next possession, again taking the Tar Heels to the Indiana 1 before Robinson scored his second touchdown for a 21-10 lead. North Carolina had a chance to pad its advantage, but Josh McGee's 31-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright with 4:20 left in the half.

Randle El then hit seven straight passes, including a 20-yarder to Derin Graham at the North Carolina 3 and to Craig Osika on the next play for a touchdown with 14 seconds left to cut the lead to 21-16 at the half.
