DOVER, Del. (AP) _ Halfback Steven Ferguson rushed for a career-high 192 yards and two touchdowns to lead Elon to a 51-28 win over Delaware State Saturday.

Elon (2-0) gained 504 yards on the ground, three shy of the school record.

The score was tied 7-7 when halfback DeWayne Thomas scored on a 79-yard run to give Elon a 14-7 lead with 7:29 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later, Antwon Stevenson recovered a bad punt snap in the endzone to score. With seven seconds left in the quarter, Derrick Moore scored on a 3-yard run to give Elon a 27-7 lead.

Ferguson got his second touchdown on a 40-yard run with 7:39 left in the third quarter. Elon's Jim Willis kicked three field goals from 27, 30 and 44 yards.

Delaware State's attack came from the air as quarterback Rashaan Matthews passed for 172 yards to set the Hornets' (0-2) record with 3,908 career passing yards.

Matthews hit Tommie Mims in the second quarter for a 41-yard touchdown pass and connected with Albert Horsey in the fourth on a 50-yard scoring pass. Horsey also scored in the first on a 58-yard pass.

Kevin Hanks scored Delaware's lone rushing touchdown, carrying the ball nine yards to score with 3:11 left in the third.
