GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) _ David Garrard threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns and East Carolina held Duke to 32 rushing yards while beating the Blue Devils 27-9 on Saturday.

Although the Pirates (2-0) kept Duke (0-1) out of the end zone in the first half, East Carolina didn't take command until the second half.

Duke finished with 269 yards, much of that after the outcome was settled.

Garrard, who was 22-of-34, also ran for 41 yards.

Garrard threw 4 yards to Lamont Chappell for a 7-3 lead and hit Rashon Burns for 36 yards for the closing touchdown.

Jamie Wilson, who led East Carolina with 16 carries for 77 yards, scored on a 6-yard run and Kevin Miller kicked two 38-yard field goals.

All of Duke's scoring came on first-half field goals by Sims Lenhardt, of 31, 49 and 42 yards.

Duke got nowhere on the ground and had to rely on the passing of Spencer Romine, who was 19-of-40 for 232 yards.

The Blue Devils controlled much of the first half, but couldn't find the end zone. Lenhardt's first field goal gave Duke a 3-0 lead, but East Carolina countered with Garard's first touchdown pass.

Two more field goals by Lenhardt put Duke back ahead 9-7, but East Carolina took the lead for good at 10-7 with 38 seconds left in the first half on Miller's first field goal.
