BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Troy Williams threw two touchdown passes to Michael Hayes and Justi Mattingly kicked a 31-yard field goal in leading Southern University to a 17-9 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday night.

Southern (2-0 overall, 1-0 SWAC) spotted UAPB (1-1, 1-1) a 3-0 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Richard Pena before Williams threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Hayes early in the second quarter to give Southern a 7-3 lead it would never relinquish.

A 36-yard field goal by Pena narrowed the score with a 36-yard field goal, but Mattingly's field goal with 2:05 left in the first half widened the scored to 10-6 and Williams' 46-yard touchdown pass to Hayes just 2:00 into the second half made it 17-6

A 34-yard field goal by Pena midway through the fourth period ended the scoring.

Williams finished with 16 completions in 34 attempts for 195 yards, but he also was intercepted twice.
