Hayes passed 51 yards to Scotty Anderson for one score, 39 yards to Walter Williams for another and Richmond's 38-yard field goal spotted Grambling a 17-0 lead that would disintegrate with a 21-point outburst by A&M in the second quarter.

A 79-yard touchdown pass from Hayes to Williams gave Grambling a 33-27 lead it would never relinquish with 5:31 left in the third quarter and Richmond's 38-yard field goal just 29 seconds into the final period gave the Tigers some insurance.

Two team safeties by A&M latge in the fourth period ended the scoring.
