The Answer Man is back! Just a few weeks after Maryland's triumph in Atlanta, it's already time to focus on the future. Andy Katz answers a few questions from ESPN.com users he receives each week.
Will Arizona's incoming freshmen be allowed to make the Australia exhibition trip, if it is after they graduate from their respective high schools? Also, thoughts on Lute finally getting into the Hall of Fame. John, the NCAA doesn't allow newcomers to go on foreign trips in the offseason. The players have to have been on the roster the previous season. On Lute, I'll be surprised if he doesn't get elected to the Hall of Fame. He has done everything necessary to be in position for the vote.
Knowing Arizona will possibly be No. 1 in the preseason polls, and having a chance to play the whole team together in Australia, what big games can we look forward to seeing them play this coming year? Arizona isn't in an exempted event because of the Australia trip. The Connecticut series is done. The Wildcats are still looking for a few marquee television games and their schedule is far from complete.
Now that Devin Smith has signed with UVA, couldn't you say that UVA's incoming class is one of the best in the country. Incoming on the court we have Todd Billet, Nick Van Der Laan, Derrick Byers and Smith. Add Majestic Mapp and you have five who could start for most teams. While not all are freshmen, I believe we match up as well as anyone in the country. Pete has done a terrific job after a tough season.
Rob,
I read on ESPN.com that DeAngelo Collins, a 6-9 power forward recruit, is seriously considering going to college instead of the NBA. He hasn't visited any colleges yet, but UConn was on his short list. This surprises me, because I haven't heard any talk about him in the local papers. He would be a great replacement for Johnie Selvie, if he decides to come. Can you tell me if this is true? Is Connecticut on his short list of schools? And when does he have to make his decision?
I'd be surprised if Collins:
a) went to college
With the draft coming up and everyone declaring for it, I'm anxious to know if Teddy Dupay is going into the draft. As I'm sure you know he has been playing in the Professional League of Barcelona (LPB) for the Cocodrilos of Carcas. In 12 playoff games he is averaging 22 points a game. He's third in that category, and first with players having a minimum of nine games. He's second in assists, averaging 6.5 a game. He is shooting 81 percent from the line and 38 percent behind the arc. And finally, he has 2.7 steals a game. In a semifinal game he had 46 points. While this isn't the NBA or college ranks, these are impressive numbers. I've followed him all through Florida and now this season playing in the LPB. I'm hoping he makes a return to the states. Dupay would be a senior this season so he doesn't have to declare for the NBA draft. His name will be on a list of eligible players to be drafted. He's likely going to go undrafted because of what happened at Florida, fair or not, and his size. He's got a tough road ahead to try and make the League.
With the exception of your column, I have not read or heard anywhere else that Duke's Mike Dunleavy is still considering entering the NBA draft, this year. Is this really a possibility? It depends on who you talk to about Dunleavy. The NBA is convinced he's flirting with the idea based on the connections to his father, while Duke would be shocked if he went in the draft. It's not a crazy idea for him to declare and see exactly where he would go in the lottery. If it's not high enough, then he would obviously return. But there is no harm in a player like Dunleavy declaring to give him more time. He's not financially strapped and wouldn't be swayed by an agent. He has the best advisor of anyone in his father.
Does John Linehan have a chance at getting drafted somewhere in the second round? I know that he was the USBL's No. 1 pick, so does that mean that he's ineligible for the NBA draft? Not at all. Linehan can still be drafted in the NBA and has an outside shot for the second round. If he can get to Chicago then he'll have a chance to prove himself as a potential second-round pick. But it will be a hard for him because of his size. It's not fair, but that's the reality. He's still the best on-the-ball defender in the draft and hopefully that will get him a shot. He should be in a camp this summer.
With David West remaining at Xavier next year, Xavier returns four starters, gets a 6-9 partial qualifier in Will Caudle (who practiced against West all year last year), and has a top 25 recruiting class coming in.. Where do you think the writers will place Xavier in the preseason? Xavier wasn't in ESPN.com's Top 25 the day after Maryland won it all in Atlanta. But that will change with West back and Romain Sato as the primary perimeter scorer. Xavier should start out as a preseason top 25 team and the team to beat in the Atlantic 10. The Musketeers will have to win some marquee games. That was the problem for this season's team. They weren't able to create a buzz about the team until deep in the A-10 season.
What's the status of Billy Edelin at Syracuse? I heard he will be eligible next year, is this true? I have been told, barring another obstacle, that Edelin will be at Syracuse next season. He apparently has done everything he was told and there haven't been any more issues for him the past two semesters. If that's the case, and Carmelo Anthony comes as planned, then the Orangemen will once again be a contender in the Big East.
Have you heard anything on Marcus Taylor? I know he declared for the draft, but what do you think the chances are for him to come back next year? Michigan State's staff is convinced that he will stay in the draft. They are already making plans to go with Chris Hill and Rashi Johnson as the two point guards next season.
