Why not Wisconsin in Big Ten?

By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

Devin Harris
Devin Harris and the Badgers are making a late bid to win the Big Ten title.
Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan isn't pleading for an NCAA Tournament berth. He doesn't have to because Wisconsin is playing its way into the tournament.

That's right, the Badgers, one game out of first place in the Big Ten, are one home win from unofficially clinching an NCAA Tournament berth.

Wisconsin has only one game remaining, against Michigan Feb. 27. If the Badgers (17-11, 10-5) win and get some help, then they can win the Big Ten. That's right, Wisconsin can win the Big Ten regular-season title.

"We're not begging for anything," Ryan says. "... Whatever kind of statement you're supposed to make in February, we're making."

Full story

Memphis at South Florida, Wednesday (ESPN2, 9:30 ET): The Bulls are billing this game as the one that could save their NCAA Tournament hopes. If that's the case then Memphis better have Kelly Wise ready if the Tigers want to keep their chances alive, too.

Creighton at Southern Illinois, Wednesday: The Salukis blew their lead on Creighton and now are in a desperate situation. Southern Illinois is two games back of the resurgent Blue Jays but could use a sweep if it wants to win the tiebreaker.

Arizona State at Arizona, Wednesday: The Sun Devils faint NCAA Tournament hopes would certainly have a bit more shine if they can sweep the Wildcats. Arizona won't be gracious hosts. Arizona got swept last week in L.A. in two games it could have won.

Duke at Wake Forest, Thursday (ESPN, 9 ET): Duke is now in the must-win mode to stay with Maryland in the race for the ACC title. Wake Forest doesn't have to worry about making the tournament and will likely run with the Blue Devils.

Tulsa at Hawaii, Thursday: If Hawaii wins, then the Rainbows will likely win the WAC because of its sweep of Tulsa. If Tulsa wins then the pressure is on the Rainbows to sweep Fresno State and Nevada next week.

Yale at Princeton, Friday: The Bulldogs are on the verge of an Ivy League title but they must come away with a split this weekend to hold off Penn.

Marquette at Cincinnati, Friday (ESPN, 7 ET): The Bearcats are anticipating this rematch. It's hard to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament if you're not the top seed in your own conference tournament. Beating Marquette would likely mean a top seed for Cincinnati in the Conference USA tourney.

Texas at Oklahoma, Saturday (ESPN, 9 ET): The Longhorns have another brutal week of games and could be spent by Saturday. Oklahoma is in a position to get the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 tournament, which could prove to be important toward a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Indiana at Michigan State, Sunday:The Hoosiers will have to earn the Big Ten title on the road with trips to Michigan State and Illinois on the docket. Michigan State is on the bubble but a win here will certainly help.

  • Player of the Week
    Steve Logan
    Steve Logan

    Steve Logan, G, Cincinnati
Our first two-time winner of the award this season. But, it's hard to give it to anyone else when he outscores a team by himself. Logan scored 41 points, Southern Miss scored 37 last Friday night. Logan scored 21 on Saint Louis earlier in the week. He's averaging 22.6 points a game and is the favorite for not only Conference USA player of the year but also for one of the five first-team all-American spots. He looks like Tim Hardaway and has the winning attitude that Hardaway also exuded on the court. Logan emerged into a go-to player over the past two seasons and has made the Bearcats a Final Four contender with his ability to take over a game.
  • Past players of the week

    Top Five
Dan Dickau, Gonzaga: Dickau scored 26, including 14 of 15 at the line, in the showdown with Pepperdine. He scored 23 on Loyola Marymount two days earlier. Dickau hit every big shot that needed to be taken during the game. He continues to make a case not only for player of the year in the WCC, but also for first- or second-team all-American status.

David Bluthenthal, USC: He was a regular in this category last season, but has really been kept quiet for most of the season. He blossomed over the weekend and scored 21 on Arizona State and then 31 on Arizona on Saturday. Bluthenthal made seven 3s in the win over the Wildcats. If Bluthenthal is a scoring option like that then the Trojans can be an Elite Eight team again.

Brandin Knight, Pittsburgh: The favorite for Big East player of the year scored 29 in the win at West Virginia, making six 3s and then scored 16, dished out nine assists and had only two turnovers in 40 minutes in the win at Syracuse. Knight continues to be the best leader in the league, too.

Frank Williams, Illinois: The much-maligned Williams scored 22 points at Michigan State earlier in the week and then put up 19 at Seton Hall to continue Illinois' resurgence. Williams has handled the criticism well by not sulking, but instead went back to his game and gives the Illini a go-to player once again.

Cordell Henry, Marquette: Most of the talk with the Eagles nationally has been about Dwyane Wade, but Henry has been just as important for this team. He scored 23 against Louisville, and scored 21 in the win over Southern Miss to push the Eagles in the top 10. He was a sensational 15 of 16 from the line in the two games.

    Team of the Week
    Maryland
The Terps hosted the biggest game of the week and won handily in taking out Duke. Maryland had the perfect gameplan by making Duke beat it from the perimeter. Duke couldn't and Steve Blake did a sensational job, with some help, on Jason Williams (6 of 22). Maryland's Chris Wilcox had a monster game, scoring 23 points to compliment Blake's 13 assists. Earlier in the week, Maryland beat Georgia Tech. The Terps are on their way to an undefeated season at Cole Field House and barring a collapse in the final four games an ACC title. That would be quite an accomplishment with a team named Duke also in the conference.

  • Past teams of the week

  • Rising Falling
USC: The Trojans are tied atop the Pac-10 and closed the deal against Arizona. They are the most talented team in the league when they're all on with the guard play (Brandon Granville and Errick Craven) to cause havoc, the power game inside (Sam Clancy) and the tough to match up shooter (David Bluthenthal). The Trojans played some tough defense on Arizona in the final minutes to seal the win, too. Virginia: The news that Adam Hall could be out for the season with the plantar fascia injury is not good for the Cavs. They need his help at the point instead of the inexperienced Keith Jenifer. Virginia was downright embarrassed at Wake Forest. The tournament isn't a lock, but neither is Virginia's ability to beat a higher ranked team unless this team starts to defend better and takes care of the basketball.
Xavier: The Musketeers continue to knock down challenges in the A-10 with the last one being Saint Joseph's. Xavier should be a lock for the NCAA Tournament and is the favorite to win the A-10 tournament, too. The Musketeers have only one loss in the league and four overall after the weekend. Forward David West is making a strong case for first-team all-American honors. Memphis: The Tigers are without Kelly Wise and until he gets back the post presence seems to be missing. Memphis is out of sync offensively and has lost three straight games. The Tigers aren't out of whack defensively as much but until they get their offensive rhythm the Tigers aren't going to be a factor in Conference USA, let alone a lock for the tournament.
Arizona State: The Sun Devils gave themselves a chance in the NCAA Tournament picture, a chance, with the road win at UCLA. Arizona State is now .500 in the league and finishes with two of its final three games at home. The Sun Devils have underachieved but had to deal with injuries throughout the season. Georgetown: Repeat, the Hoyas have the talent to be better than an average Big East team. Trust us, they do. But they simply haven't closed out games well, especially games they have to win (see Notre Dame and Villanova). Georgetown could still win the Big East tournament and be a tough tournament out but the Hoyas have to get there first and that's becoming increasingly difficult.
Wake Forest:The Demon Deacons responded with a loss at Clemson with a convincing win over Virginia. If Wake Forest could play the way it did Sunday then Wake Forest could be a pest in the ACC tournament again. Wake Forest ran well and Darius Songalia was a go-to player in the middle. Craig Dawson scored 38 points and made 11 3s in the loss to Clemson. Iowa: Kudos to Steve Alford to sitting Reggie Evans for missing a class but he admittedly did it a game too late. He played him against Penn State and wasn't too happy with himself. The Hawkeyes lost and then he sat him to regain control of the team against Ohio State. Iowa still has the talent to be a factor in the Big Ten tournament, but it won't happen unless this team turmoil can solve its chemistry issues.
Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights continue to be a tough out at home. The RAC swallowed up Notre Dame last week and then Miami Sunday. Add those two to Syracuse, Georgetown and Connecticut. The Scarlet Knights are still a factor for the NCAA Tournament, if they can win on the road in the final two weeks. UCLA: Will the real UCLA stand up? The Bruins are nowhere to be found when they must win consecutive games. The loss to Villanova was avoidable and so too was the loss to Arizona State. UCLA doesn't look like it will win the Pac-10 or go very far in the NCAA Tournament until they discover a purpose every game, no matter the opponent.
Texas: The Longhorns hit a down slide in the middle of the Big 12 but rebounded last week and are suddenly alone in third place in the standings with four losses. The win at Missouri Sunday should show that the Longhorns could be a factor in March. They've got the point, the power game and the shooters to be a team that can advance. California: The Bears blew a chance to stay with the Pac-10 leaders by losing at Washington. That loss is costly to Cal's chances to stay within the sight of the top spot. The Bears are still a game back in the loss column but they made life a bit harder for themselves. Cal has the personnel to mount a run for the title but has to be tougher in must-win road games.
Creighton:The Bluejays are suddenly standing alone in first place in the Missouri Valley. Dana Altman might be one of the most underrated coaches in the country. He continues to maximize the most out of his talent and has dealt with injuries and suspensions and didn't lose this team during the heart of the conference season. Creighton should once again be back in the NCAAs. Southern Illinois: The Salukis blew their showdown chance with Creighton for first by losing twice on the road at Southwest Missouri State and Illinois State. Southern Illinois essentially silenced its at-large chances by dropping the two games and falling to 21-6. The Salukis have the win over Indiana but they can't have a poor finish and expect to get a kind look from the committee.
Houston: Lost in the hype of Cincinnati and Marquette in Conference USA is the amazing job Ray McCallum is doing at Houston. The Cougars beat Memphis last week and are tied with South Florida at 7-5 in the National Division, only two games behind Memphis. Houston has the athletes to be a factor and a spoiler in the Conference USA tourney. Kentucky: The Wildcats continue their erratic season by dropping the game at Georgia. Losing to Georgia isn't bad but Tubby Smith is questioning the Wildcats' toughness. He's not happy with Keith Bogans' erratic play, either. Rashaad Carruth has been in and out of the doghouse. Kentucky has the talent to win the SEC tournament and make a deep run but need those two ‘Cats to be on a roll.
Northwestern: Is there anyone getting more out of less than Bill Carmody? This team was left for dead in the preseason but is suddenly tied with Michigan State at 6-6 in the middle of the Big Ten. The Wildcats should be a lock for the NIT but can't rule out an NCAA Tournament run if they could lull the Big Ten teams to sleep in the conference tournament. They are the one team that no one, that's right no one, wants to play in Indianapolis the first week of March Fresno State: Can it get any worse for the Bulldogs? Point guard Chris Sandy was the latest to go down with eligibility problems. He's out indefinitely for an extra benefit. Chris Jefferies is likely out for the season with a knee injury after having surgery last week. And the Bulldogs lost at home to Boise State because of a 19-2 run late in the game.
Ole Miss:The Rebels didn't have the top 50 win, outside of Arkansas, that would get the attention of the NCAA Tournament selection committee before the Rebels beat Florida. That win puts the Rebels in the Dance, barring a sudden collapse. Rod Barnes once again proves that he is one of the most underrated coaches in the nation, let alone the SEC. Arkansas: The Razorbacks have the toughest schedule, a top 40 RPI but the sympathy ends when Arkansas loses at home to LSU. Arkansas is now even in the SEC West with LSU and even overall. That's not good enough to be this season's Georgia and get in with a 16-14 record. Being 12-12 is more of an NIT mark and that's assuming Arkansas can stay above .500.
