Don't worry, shift in power is coming

ESPN.com

Want to start a debate? Just create a ranking of college basketball teams, offer users a chance to e-mail their comments about said ranking and post comments on a weekly basis. That is what ESPN.com has done with its Power 16, a weekly ranking of teams leading up to March.

Even before this week's rash of upsets in Maui and elsewhere, the rankings were volitle to say the least. And with no end to these shockers in sight, expect plenty of change in the coming weeks. Below are some of the best e-mails received in the past week. Here's what users had to say about Week 2 of ESPN.com's Power 16.:

"Get ready for the Hawkeyes to move into No. 1. After many of the Kansas and UCLA wannabes, the Big Ten is finally showing its true toughness. A win over Memphis, and one over Mizzou will show that Luke Recker and the Hawkeyes are the real deal."

    Mark Williams
    Indianapolis, Ind.

"Looks like you need to re-think your opinion of mid-major conferences. It's about time these teams get a shot early in the season. Wonder what the schedule will look like in the years to come."

OMG! Is Ball State suddenly a Power 16 team?! Most flukes are only one game. What gives ESPN? Are you going to give the Cards some deserved love?
Jasun Rutter
Ogden, Utah

    Justin Mugge
    Phoenix, Ariz.

"I'm a true blue UK fan, and dropping to 12th was a bad decision. We lose to a quality team with one of the best centers in the nation. I think Arizona is overrated, they just played harder than Maryland and Florida. The Cats will prove their (former) rating playing Duke, better hope their ready."

    Brent Gibson
    Lexington, Ky.

"Well, so much for Kansas and UCLA as No. 1 seeds. Who's got next? Arizona? Ball State? This is being written about 5 minutes after the conclusion of that one, and they looked pretty sharp. Okay, just kidding. Just shows that this is going to be one of those years with maybe 2 or 3 'dominant' teams (Duke, Illinois, maybe Maryland, 'Zona?) and about 15 teams that can't quite shake their inexperience."

    Mike Lommler
    Springfield, Ill.

"As a die-hard Illinois fan this is hard for me to say. I think Missouri is worth a 1 or 2 seed. Missouri has an all star in Kareem Rush and he is going to give Jason Williams a run for his money for player of the year. The Missouri Illinois match up promises to be one of the best games of the year. Go Illini!"

    Pat Comerford
    Decatur, Ill.

"I cannot believe you have Kentucky ahead of Iowa and Missouri. Iowa has the best duo of Reggie Evans and Luke Recker in the country. Missouri has one of the most athletic attacks in the country. After a horrible performance against Western Kentucky I think you have to rate Iowa and Missouri at or above Kentucky."

    Ross Gibson
    Malibu, Calif.

"WOW. There is no middle ground with you guys. First, you don't even have Arizona on your radar, and this week they explode all the way up to a two spot? Did anyone on your staff watch these three games all the way through? It's a long road to March Madness, and with a short bench, any team that can get Arizona into foul trouble kicks up their win column a notch. For our (the fans) sake keep 'em ranked low -- for some reason that works best. We miss you Bobbi!"

    Michael Alvarado
    North Hollywood, Calif.

Western's victory over UK was more of a testament to Western than it was a knock on UK. ... I'm a UK fan and was very impressed with Western. You'll have a hard time convincing me that there are 16 better teams than Western in the country!
Dennis Swanson
Lexington, Ky.
"I disagree with Syracuse being the lone Big East team. If you are going to have only one Big East team than I feel it should be Boston College. They return the Big East player of the year in Troy Bell and look better on paper this year than last year. They may be left out now but I believe they will be appearing in the Power 16 very soon which would be justly deserved."

    Mark Sullivan
    Port Washington, N.Y.

"How is Fresno State not in the top 16? They had a great team last year and haven't lost many important players (except for Tito Maddox). They beat a very good USC team without even playing well in the second half. They have two Wooden Award contenders in Chris Jefferies and Melvin Ely. ESPN needs to show more love to the smaller conferences."

    Derrick Arakelian
    Fresno, Calif.

"The Illini are as solid as anyone in the nation this year -- and will stick around as one of your top 4 seeds all year, in spite of another tough as nails schedule. Opening with Gonzaga is a heck of a lot tougher than Hampton or Eastern Washington. Nice job Self, and nice job Illini!"

    Rich FeeDog
    Chicago, Ill.

"When will you stop giving KU props based on reputation. While I certainly agree that they should be included in the Power 16, without playing a game this year, how can you have them as a 1 seed and Missouri a 3 seed? It's ridiculous. With Kareem Rush, Arthur Johnson, an improved recruiting class, and two convincing wins against admittedly lesser opponents, Missouri's spot underneath Kansas surely just has to do with ESPN's continual catering to the teams that have a good past with no consideration to teams that improve themselves and are up and comers. Kansas has done nothing this year to deserve that 1 seed in these very premature power rankings so I hope you correct that obvious mistake the next time these are released."

    Matt Howell
    St. Louis, Mo.

"I believe you left out Alabama on your power 16. I believe with there two impressive wins on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, they deserve better respect. I think over the next couple of weeks, they will really prove there self as a legitimate candidate to win the SEC. "

    Chris Emerson
    North Augusta, S.C.
Arizona plays 7 out of the Power 16. Three down, four more to go.
Freddie Ramirez
Tucson Ariz.

"How do you preseason rank UVA in the top 12 and then after one game of domination over a under-sized Wagner stick them in the basement of the Power 16? The 'jury' needs to get recess from their Bristol chamber and watch a truly exceptional team roll and dominate."

    Matt Hawkins
    Charlottesville, Va.

"If Wake Forest wins the Preseason NIT, they better be somewhere on this list."

    Will Kladakis
    Cincinnati, Ohio

"Boston College gets left out of the Sweet 16? Come on guys I know you think that the only place BC can go is down, but it is simply disrespectful that you give Syracuse a 4 seed instead of BC. Troy Bell is hands down the best player in the Big East and is a guaranteed 20 points a night. On top of that Uka Agbai is vastly underrated at the power forward position and Ryan Sidney is one of the most athletic players in the Big East. With the addition of Nate Doornekamp at center BC is much stronger at that position than they were last year, and I think that that you are making a big mistake by assuming that BC is going to flop this year. Make no mistakes about it, BC will be in the Power 16 as the season progresses and people see that this team is not a one-year-wonder."

    Brendan Crowley
    Boston, Mass.

"Kansas and Mizzou better watch out for this Oklahoma State Cowboys team. With the duo of Victor Williams and Mo Baker and the coaching of Eddie Sutton the Pokes have a great shot for reaching the Final Four come this spring."

    Chad Jones
    Stillwater, Okla.
