A Duke dynasty under Coach K

In his 21 years on the Duke bench, Mike Krzyzewski has been one of the most dominant college coaches over the past two decades. Here is a look at the Duke dynasty – nine Final Fours, seven championship games and three national titles – under this guidance:

2000-01
  • Leads Duke to its third national championship with an 82-72 victory over Arizona. Duke finishes the season 35-4.
  • Duke finishes the regular season ranked No. 1 under Krzyzewski for the fifth time and becomes the first team to win the NCAA championship after entering the tournament ranked No. 1 since UCLA in 1995.
  • Krzyzewski wins his 500th career game at Duke on Nov. 18, 2000. Milestone victory comes in his 660th game as Duke head coach. Only Kentucky's Adolph Rupp (583), UNLV's Jerry Tarkanian (614), North Carolina's Dean Smith (653) and Oklahoma State's Henry Iba (654) won 500 games quicker at one school. Cameron Indoor Stadium floor is renamed "Coach K Court" in his honor.

    1999-2000
  • Loses to eventual national championship runner-up Florida in Sweet 16, finishing the season with a 29-5 record.
  • Duke wins its fourth consecutive outright ACC title with a 15-1 mark.
  • The 1999-2000 season completes a four-year span in which the Blue Devils win 58 games in the ACC – establishing a new record for conference wins during four seasons.

    1998-99
  • After equaling the record for most wins in a season with 37, the Blue Devils advance to the national championship game before losing to UConn.
  • Duke wins school-record 32 games in a row – including a perfect ACC run of 16-0 – becoming the first team to complete the ACC season undefeated. The Blue Devils also win their first ACC Tournament title since 1992.

    1994-98
  • Duke finishes the 1997-98 season 32-4 after losing to Kentucky in the NCAA regional finals.
  • After two sub-20 win seasons, the Blue Devils reel off 24 wins and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Krzyzewski returns from back surgery in 1995-96 season, and Blue Devils return to NCAA Tournament after one-year absence. But an 18-13 season ends in a first-round loss to Eastern Michigan.
  • A back injury forces Krzyzewski to leave the Duke bench after the 12th game of the '94-95 season. He does not return after surgery. Duke, which starts the season 9-3 under Krzyzewski's guidance, fails to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 seasons.

    1993-94
  • The Blue Devils reach their sixth Final Four in seven seasons and third national championship game under Krzyzewski, but fall to Arkansas 76-72 in their bid to win a third national title in four years.
  • Duke finishes the season 28-6, winning the ACC regular season championship.

    IN THE ARMY
Mike Krzyzewski started his coaching career at Army. In five seasons, the Cadets were 73-59. Krzyzewski guided Army to a 20-win season in 1977 and to the 1978 NIT before leaving for Duke after the 1979-80 season.

    1987-92
  • The Blue Devils reach five straight Final Fours during this period, winning back-to-back national championships in 1991 and 1992.
  • Duke wins its first national championship under Krzyzewski in 1991 with a 72-65 victory over Kansas. The second title comes 12 months later when Duke beats Michigan 71-51.
  • In his third Final Four, Krzyzewski guides Duke to the 1990 national championship game against UNLV, which beats the Blue Devils 103-73.
  • The Blue Devils lose to Seton Hall (1989) and Kansas (1988) in back-to-back national semifinal games.

    1985-86
  • The Blue Devils reach their first Final Four under Krzyzewski and advance to the championship game with a 71-67 victory over Kansas. Louisville denies Coach K his first title, beating Duke 72-69 in the title game.

    1983-84
  • In his fourth season at Duke, Krzyzewski guides the Blue Devils back to the NCAA Tournament. It's Duke's first appearance in the tournament since 1980. Duke loses to Washington in the first round, but will become a fixture in the NCAAs under Coach K, reaching the tournament in 17 of the next 18 seasons.
