Iowa State could name Chattanooga's Jeff Lebo as its men's basketball coach as early as Tuesday morning, sources told ESPN.com. Lebo and his wife were in Ames, Iowa on Monday for an on-campus visit and planned dinner with the university's hierarchy, which is trying to convince Lebo that he should accept an offer to replace Larry Eustachy. "We haven't heard a thing," Chattanooga spokesman Jeff Romero told The Associated Press on Monday. But a source close to the 20-member advisory committee told The Des Moines Register for Tuesday's editions that Lebo's interview went so well he was the search group's unanimous choice. "A lot of people will say, 'Gosh, there's only one decision,''' John Shulman, one of Lebo's assistants, told The Associated Press. "But he's making the decision that's best for him, his family, this program, for all of us. "I feel comfortable that, when the sun sets, he'll make the right decision.'' Last week, Eustachy reached a $960,000 settlement with Iowa State after reports surfaced that he had partied with college students in Missouri and Kansas. Sources told ESPN.com that school officials told Iowa State assistant Wayne Morgan that he was not the final choice to succeed Eustachy after he and Lebo were the only two remaining candidates. Wyoming coach Steve McClain withdrew as a candidate Sunday after interviewing over the weekend in Des Moines. Lebo, who just finished his first season at Chattanooga, and Morgan also interviewed with Iowa State officials in Des Moines over the weekend. Lebo, 36, is a coach on the rise who would come at a cheaper price than McClain. Some media reports indicated Iowa State was willing to offer up to $800,000 annually for up to six years to land McClain. Lebo was the coach at Tennessee Tech before heading to Chattanooga, and Lebo has no ties to the Big 12 or the Midwest. A Carlisle, Pa., native, he was thought to be a candidate at Penn State but didn't actively pursue the job, which went to East Tennessee State's Ed DeChellis. Lebo also has the North Carolina pedigree of playing for Dean Smith. McClain, who grew up in Orient, Iowa, said the lure of returning to coach Division I basketball in his native state drove his decision to look into the Cyclones' opening. "But I guess going home isn't always best," he said. Meanwhile, Morgan is also a legitimate candidate. The former Long Beach State head coach and Syracuse assistant has strong ties with the recruiting class -- three Massachusetts prep players -- and the current roster of players. The new head coach might have to keep Morgan as an assistant if Morgan doesn't get the job. Iowa State's other assistants, Bob Sundvold and Steve Barnes, are not candidates for the job. Creighton's Dana Altman, considered the favorite to replace Eustachy, and Fresno State's Ray Lopes, a former assistant at Oklahoma, both pulled out of the running Friday. Information from ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz and The Associated Press was used in this report. |
