Altman won't pursue job; Cyclones interview Morgan

By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

Creighton coach Dana Altman withdrew his name from consideration for the Iowa State job Friday, putting more pressure on the school to find a replacement.

The school interviewed Iowa State assistant Wayne Morgan on the same day.

Iowa State is looking to replace Larry Eustachy, who resigned Monday following reports he had partied with college students in Missouri and Kansas.

Sources said there were several reasons why Altman did not want to stay in the running:

  • Iowa State did not approach him immediately and wanted to interview several candidates as part of the interview process.
  • He had already interviewed for the Illinois and Georgia jobs this offseason and did not want to get into another long process for another job.
  • He has a 10-year offer on the table from Creighton.
  • Iowa State is asking the new coach to retain one of Eustachy's assistants, Wayne Morgan.

Iowa State is expected to pursue other candidates outside the program: Wyoming coach Steve McClain, an Iowa native; Chattanooga's Jeff Lebo; Utah State coach Stew Morrill, who was hired by current Iowa State athletic director Bruce Van De Velde to succeed Eustachy at Utah State when Eustachy left for Iowa State; and Iowa State assistant Morgan, who is a long shot for the job.

Fresno State coach Ray Lopes, a former assistant to Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma, withdrew his name from consideration Friday.

Associate athletic director Laird Veatch said it was possible Iowa State could hire a new coach as early as next week.

"I don't think that is out of the question," he told The Associated Press on Friday. "If that were to happen, that would be great. It depends on how things would progress."
