Kaman leaves early as MAC player of year

Associated Press

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan center Chris Kaman will skip his senior season for the NBA draft.

The school made the announcement Wednesday.

Kaman was the Mid-American Conference player of the year and defensive player of the year. He led the nation with 25 double-doubles and averaged 22.4 points, 12 rebounds, 3.2 blocks a game and made 62.2 percent of his shots.

Kaman led Central Michigan to its best record (25-7), MAC regular season and tournament titles and its first win in the NCAA tournament since 1975. The team beat Creighton before losing to Duke in the second round.

Dan Majerle, the 14th pick in the 1988 draft, was the last Central Michigan player drafted.

After the Chippewas earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1987, Kaman said he hoped his crafty footwork and ability to run up and down the court would separate him from current and past NBA centers.

"I don't want people to ever compare me to Greg Ostertag, Bryant Reeves or Todd MacCulloch," Kaman said. "They can't move, and they don't move well. I think I move real well.

"I want to be able to be about 270 pounds with good footwork, good hands and good coordination. I don't want to just be a guy who can grab rebounds and score on putbacks because of my size. I want to be an all-around impact player."

If the 7-foot, 255-pound Kaman does not hire an agent, he has until June 19 to withdraw from the draft to return to Central Michigan for his senior season.

The NBA draft is June 26.
