Sutton very interested in coaching spot

Associated Press

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State associate head coach Sean Sutton has interviewed for the vacant head coaching job at Clemson.

Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips, the former OSU athletic director, and associate athletic director Bill D'Andrea flew to Stillwater Monday to interview Sutton, 34, the son of head coach Eddie Sutton.

"We had a good visit and I thought it was a very positive discussion,'' Sean Sutton said. "I'm very interested in the position at Clemson and at this point we'll have to see how things go.

"I've always had the ambition to be a head coach.

"At the same time I feel I have a great job here.''

Sutton has been a Cowboy assistant since 1994 after playing for his father at Kentucky and OSU.

Sean Sutton, Phillips and D'andra met for about 90 minutes.

"It was a good meeting,'' Phillips said. "It's early in the process. People should probably be careful not to read too much into it.

"We will interview several people before we make a decision, and we are a ways away from making a decision.''

Phillips has asked Eddie Sutton to assist him and Eddie Sutton said he has submitted a list of head coaches for Phillips to consider and also endorsed Sean.

"There is no doubt Sean is ready to become a head coach,'' Eddie Sutton said.

Clemson is looking to replace Larry Shyatt, who resigned March 17.
