Land third Bearcat to quit this year, other two came back

Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- Backup forward Eugene Land quit Cincinnati's basketball team Wednesday and backup center Rod Flowers was suspended indefinitely before a game against Alabama-Birmingham.

Coach Bob Huggins said Land quit for personal reasons. He is the third Cincinnati player to quit this season -- reserves Eric Hicks and Tony Bobbitt also left the team for a few days, but were reinstated.

Huggins said Flowers' suspension was for conduct detrimental to the team. He didn't give specifics.

Land, a 6-foot-7 senior, missed two years while recovering from reconstructive knee surgery. He had played three or fewer minutes in six of the last seven games, and was averaging 1.1 points per game for the season.

Flowers, a 6-8 junior, is the Bearcats' second-string center. He played 17 minutes and scored nine points against East Carolina last week, but has played seven or fewer minutes in six of the last seven games.

Huggins has repeatedly berated Flowers during games for his lack of defense. Flowers is averaging 3.0 points and 2.4 rebounds.

The lack of a dependable center has been one of Cincinnati's main problems in a 16-9 season that has ended its seven-year run as Conference USA regular-season champions.
