Hairston beats buzzer, Wisconsin-Milwaukee with tip

Associated Press

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Stetson Hairston tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer to give Southern Illinois a 66-64 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday, snapping the Panthers' eight-game winning streak.

Officials reviewed Hairston's putback before determining the shot beat the clock, prompting fans to rush the court to celebrate the non-conference win.

Kent Williams had 18 points and Jermaine Dearman had 12 points for Southern Illinois (19-5). The Salukis have won 25 straight at home and are tied for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference with Creighton.

Milwaukee-Wisconsin (21-6) trailed 47-31, but cut the deficit to 50-44 on a layup by Dylan Page with 12:29 to go. The Panthers then made it 52-all on a runner by Ronnie Jones, capping a 21-5 run. With the game tied, Clay Tucker missed a 3-pointer and the ball went out of bounds with 16 seconds left.

Darren Brooks then brought the ball up the court, missed a layup when Hairston tapped it in for the game-winner.

Justin Lettenberger led Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 14 points. Page and Jason Frederick each added 11.
