Carey satisfactory after leaving court on stretcher

ESPN.com news services

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico guard Senque Carey was hospitalized in satisfactory condition Tuesday after being taken from the court on a stretcher during the Lobos' game against Northwestern State.

Lobos coach Ritchie McKay said Tuesday doctors told him Carey is experiencing temporary paralysis, adding he had movement in his hands Tuesday morning. McKay wouldn't elaborate.

University of New Mexico Hospital would not release details of Carey's injury. During his junior year in high school in Mountain View, Calif., Carey suffered a similar case of temporary paralysis but later regained full movement, McKay said.

"We're all just praying for him," McKay said. "Someone told me when I walked out of the hospital, 'congratulations on your first win at New Mexico.' " New Mexico won Monday night's game 60-56.

"I didn't even realize it. My emotions are all caught up with 'Q.' That's all we're thinking about right now."

Carey went down with 7:41 left in the first half after appearing to have collided with Northwestern player Byron Allen, who was driving to the basket. Carey barely moved for about 10 minutes while medical personnel tended to him. He was placed in a neck brace and removed from the court.

Carey was conscious when brought to the hospital. The hospital said Tuesday that Carey's condition had been upgraded to satisfactory.

"He was in good spirits," McKay said after visiting Carey in the hospital late Monday night. "We're encouraged but it was very, very scary and it's still very, very serious."
