CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati basketball coach Bob Huggins was upgraded to fair condition Friday.
The 49-year-old Huggins remains at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, recovering from a heart attack. He underwent tests Thursday to determine how much damage the heart attack caused.
Test results were not immediately available.
Huggins had the heart attack Sept. 28 at the Pittsburgh airport while on a recruiting trip. He had been listed in serious but stable condition since he was transferred Wednesday from the Medical Center in Beaver, Pa.
Doctors at the suburban Pittsburgh hospital implanted a metal mesh stent in Huggins' chest to keep a clogged artery open.
It's uncertain when Huggins can leave the hospital or return to work.
Cincinnati opens practice for the new season on Oct. 12. Doctors have said Huggins could need 4-to-6 weeks to recuperate.
Huggins was the third-youngest coach to get 500 wins in Division I. His career record is 500-172, including a 332-100 record at Cincinnati.
The Bearcats have been ranked No. 1 several times during his tenure but have made the Final Four just once. Cincinnati went 31-4 last season, losing to UCLA 105-101 in double overtime in the second round of the NCAA tournament. |
