SEATTLE -- The University of Washington will send a written report within the next two weeks to the Pac-10 Conference to report multiple NCAA violations in its men's basketball program, athletics director Barbara Hedges said. A Washington internal investigation revealed Huskies assistant coach Cameron Dollar, who works under head coach Lorenzo Romar, violated several recruiting rules, Hedges said. "There will be penalties that we will assess upon ourselves," she said. "We certainly found violations, no question about that." Hedges said the Pac-10 will further investigate the case when its compliance committee meets in December and will forward it to the NCAA. The NCAA is conducting its own investigation. "We are taking this very seriously," Hedges said. "We are very concerned. We want to be proactive as an institution, and that's exactly what we're doing." The violations center on the Huskies' recruitment of 6-foot-9 Josh Heytvelt, of Clarkston High School, last spring while he played for the Seattle Rotary Select team. Heytvelt, 16 and just starting his junior year now, was contacted several months before NCAA rules allow. The first contact a coach can have with a prospect is a single phone call in March of his junior year. The NCAA forbids all other contact until July 1 after his junior year is completed. Dollar continued to contact Heytvelt and send his family information about the University of Washington, although sending information is not a violation. He also visited the player and repeatedly called him. According to a Washington employee, The Seattle Times reported, cellular phone and office phone records show Dollar made 20 improper calls to Heytvelt. Rolin Heytvelt, the player's father, said Dollar and his wife, Deonca, drove more than six hours to Clarkston, in eastern Washington near the Idaho border, and visited the family in the middle of August. "The Huskies were letting our family know that they were interested in Josh, but they were pushing the boundaries of what they are allowed to do," Rolin Heytvelt said. "They need to police themselves or the NCAA needs to police it." Heytvelt said he didn't want to discredit the Huskies or Dollar. "There's a lot of other programs interested in him and I don't want to detract from those programs and get my son in hot water," he said. "We've been open and honest with the NCAA." Hedges said Dollar wasn't allowed to recruit off campus during the recruiting period that runs from Sept. 9 through Oct. 5. "We took him off the road during the current contact period," she said. "The majority of the violations involve Cameron Dollar." She would not say who was involved in the remainder of the violations. Dollar said, "I can't speak about anything involved with the University of Washington." Dollar previously worked as an assistant coach under Romar at St. Louis University for three years. Romar was hired by the Washington in April. The NCAA had no comment Friday about the investigation. |
