CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Guard Marcus Barnes, who helped lead the Miami Hurricanes to the NCAA tournament last year, was kicked off the team Thursday for an unspecified violation of team rules. The Miami Herald reported that Barnes' dismissal from Miami had to do with a domestic abuse charge as Barnes was being kicked out of an apartment by his girlfriend on Aug. 19.
Barnes' departure now forces the Hurricanes to replace their leading 3-point shooter and their entire backcourt from last season. Point guard John Salmons graduated and was picked No. 26 in the NBA draft.
Last season, Barnes started 30 of Miami's 32 games, averaging 12.3 points, 2.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds. He finished second on the team with 44 steals and led the Hurricanes with 79 3-pointers.
Barnes helped lead Miami to a 14-0 start and 24-8 record last season. He scored 13 points in the Hurricanes' 93-80 first-round defeat against Missouri.
A call to Miami coach Perry Clark seeking comment was not immediately returned Thursday. |
