Koenig gets waiver to play in AAU tourney

Associated Press

FARGO, N.D. -- Fargo North basketball standout Tyler Koenig has been given a waiver allowing him to play in an AAU tournament this weekend.

Koenig had sued the NCAA over a rule that allowed him to play on a team only within 100 miles of his home.

The regulation was enacted last spring to prevent amateur squads from treating young players like semiprofessional free agents.

Koenig plays with the Dakota Schoolers, a Sioux Falls, S.D., team about 250 miles from his home that is headed for a Las Vegas AAU tournament this weekend. He and Eric Henkel of Missoula, Mont., were named in the lawsuit over the NCAA rule.

Philadelphia attorney Richard Meltzer filed the lawsuit on behalf of the summer basketball camp operators.

He said the NCAA failed to tell them that a waiver provision was included in its 400-page manual, and that the lawsuit likely will now be dismissed.
