Technical draws Knight's ire

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Indiana coach Bob Knight knows technicals. And this is one he swears he didn't deserve.

The always colorful and often controversial Knight picked up a technical midway through the first half of the Hoosiers' 72-69 loss to Illinois on Friday in the Big Ten tournament.

With 10:16 left in the half, guard Dane Fife was called for a foul on Sergio McClain. Knight, who had been relatively quiet, got up and started yelling at referee Art McDonald. Knight continued complaining for about a minute before McDonald finally gave him a technical with 9:04 left in the half.

Then, Knight really got irate and walked toward center court before being pulled back to the bench by his son, Pat, an assistant coach for the Hoosiers.

"The referee told me to relax," Knight said. "I told him, 'Don't tell me to relax.' Technical foul. It was one of the worst technicals I've had and I've had a few. That may have been as bad as any I've ever seen."

Knight directed occasional glares and complaints at McDonald the rest of the game, one time telling guard Michael Lewis to stop talking to McDonald after a timeout.
