THE NUMBER
17
Kansas wound up losing by 16 to Illinois. The Jayhawks missed 17 free throws (18-35). Nick Collison, while he led the team with 23 points, missed 8 of 14 himself.

Woods playing
winning role

Nothing has come as easy as Arizona expected this season. Nobody knows that more than Loren Woods, who after a brutal start to the season is playing his best basketball. It's no coincidence the Wildcats are also at the top of their game, and after beating Ole Miss on Friday, now just three wins from fulfilling all their preseason promise.

Hey, Hey, Hey ... Owls all the Way

Question of the Day
Which No. 1 seed faces the toughest game this weekend?

ESPN.com's Andy Katz
Illinois. Arizona is hungry, very hungry, to get back at the Illini for a loss in December when the Wildcats were askew. They didn't appreciate the physical play in Chicago and are on a mission to get coach Lute Olson to the Final Four. Loren Woods is playing his best basketball of the season and could cause matchup problems for the Illini big men like Brian Cook. The Illini are playing with confidence, but there's almost a sense that they would be the underdog in a matchup with Arizona. They might have been a secure top seed, but they were given the toughest No. 2 seed to get past in the Midwest. This is the first time that all four No. 1 seeds advanced to the Elite Eight since 1993. Illinois will have the hardest time getting to the Final Four.

ESPN's Dick Vitale
Michigan State. The Spartans could have the toughest time in the Elite Eight. Although the Temple Owls are only an 11th seed, they are more than hot; they are playing unbelievable basketball, baby! The Owls have managed to get out to at least an 18-point lead in the first half of each of their tournament games. Plus, the Spartans could have a tough time shooting on the perimeter against the Temple "matchup zone". Tom Izzo won't be getting much sleep over the next few days as he tries to prepare for John Cheney's dynamic team. The Owls are on a good, old-fashioned roll, and will be a stern test for the Michigan State Spartans.

Friday's Storylines

PLAYER OF DAY..............................
Frank Williams. His career-high 30 points came on 25 shots, but he made 11 to offset the 1-for-13 shooting of backcourt mate Corey Bradford. Williams also made all five of his free-throw attempts to the envy of Jayhawk fans.

RANDOM THOUGHT...............................
Until Kansas lost, the numbers favored the Jayhawks reaching Minneapolis. While there have never been four No. 1s in a Final Four, three times in the '90s saw three No. 1s win their regions. In two of those cases (1997, '99), a No. 4 seed was the fourth team in the Final Four. Kansas was the No. 2 seed that joined three No. 1s in '93.

STOCK RISING.....................................
Bill Self. No wonder this guy is being targeted in Tennessee (Good luck). But can his value get any higher? Self has pulled off the impossible, making his second straight Elite Eight appearance with two different teams. How often has this happened in NCAA Tournament history? According to the crack ESPN research staff -- never.
STOCK FALLING..................................
Eric Chenowith. So, this is how Kansas fans will remember you, Eric: 0 points, 0 shots, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 0-2 FTs ... in 22 minutes. And we wanted so much to believe the big fella could come up big in big games.
HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU................
Who's in charge of the color choices on the Alamodome court? The set designer for "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh"? And don't get us started on The Pond. It's been a technicolor nightmare for years. Oh, and in case you weren't sure, the "Atlantic 10" is the host of the East Region in Philadelphia. "Williams pulls up from the center circle for a 3-pointer ..."

Come on, if you're bracket wasn't busted by now in the South Region, you must have been raised on Philly Cheesesteaks. If that's the case, we can still hear you signing "Who Let the Owls Out".

"Until somebody knocks them off, they're the champions. We made run after run at them. But they kept coming at us, coming at us, coming at us."
