Sources: Dotson dismissed for drug test failure

Carlton Dotson was dismissed from the Baylor basketball program because he didn't show for a second drug test in May after failing a previous one, multiple school sources told ESPN.com.

Under Baylor's school policy, student-athletes failing one drug test may face school punishment but not expulsion. If they fail a second one, sources said, the punishment increases. A third failure would lead to dismissal.

But failing to show for a second drug test after a positive test is grounds for losing an athletic scholarship. Other schools have a similar policy.

Baylor sources said Dotson remained on scholarship for summer school so he would be in good academic standing to transfer. Baylor coach Dave Bliss told ESPN.com earlier this month that in an April meeting, he and Dotson agreed that Dotson would look for another school.

Dotson disputed that arrangement when contacted by a reporter from Texas prior to being arrested last week in Maryland and charged with the murder of Patrick Dennehy. Dotson remains in jail without bond.

Baylor sources said Bliss wasn't at liberty to discuss the failed drug test under privacy laws.

Melissa Kethley, Dotson's estranged wife since April, told The Dallas Morning News that Dotson and other basketball players faked drug tests and that Dotson received cash from Baylor assistant coaches.

Baylor sources refute Kethley's claims that Dotson regularly received money at the Farrell Center.

Those sources indicated that Dotson received $25 in meal money -- as would every player -- when the school food services were closed during holidays or vacations. Sources said Dotson would sometimes miss a day and then exit the Farrell Center with $50 for two days' worth of meal money.
