Third-year coach Dave Bliss, who needs two victories to reach the 500 mark, hopes the Bears can continue their turnaround that carried them to an NIT berth and the fourth-best record in school history (19-12). They'll have to do so without their two best players from last season - versatile forward Terry Black (15.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg) and guard DeMarcus Minor (15.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg). The plan is for freshman forward Lawrence Roberts, who can play outside or near the basket, to help offset the loss of Black. Roberts will have to provide consistency and intensity to do that. Senior forward Greg Davis (9.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and sophomore center R.T. Guinn, who played for Bliss during his final season at New Mexico, could give the Bears a solid frontline. That unit could be even better if sophomore forward Logan Kosmalski (6.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg) builds on a strong freshman season. In the backcourt, sophomore Matt Sayman (4.9 ppg, 1.5 apg) should take over for Minor. However, he won't be asked to score nearly as much. Just run the offense and distribute the ball. Junior Wendell Greenleaf (10.6 ppg, 2.6 apg) has the capacity to score. But Bliss is excited about another of his former New Mexico players, senior Kevin Henry. The 6-2 Henry started for two seasons at New Mexico and set the school single-season record for 3-pointers (102) as a sophomore under Bliss. You know Henry will have the green light with the Bears. What we like: Bliss took his winning reputation and has begun to turn around a program that has been a non-factor for years. The Bears beat two top-10 teams last season and secured a postseason berth, an accomplishment few people saw coming. Even with the losses of Black and Minor, Bliss seems genuinely excited about the mix of talent. Guinn and Roberts should provide an instant boost, which is essential considering the Bears could struggle early getting accustomed to life without their two stars. What we don't like: Sustaining success at a program such as Baylor's is never easy. And starting the season without a veteran point guard doesn't help. In addition, there is no guarantee all the new faces will mesh quickly, if at all. And don't expect this team to sneak up on any of its Big 12 brethren this season. Not a chance. The bottom line: Let's immediately address the issue of this team's ability to secure a postseason berth. Barring a surprising run in the conference tournament, the Bears won't get into the NCAA Tournament, which is the logical next step after last season. However, if the Bears can again pile up victories against soft non-conference teams and steal some victories in conference play, they should get back to the NIT.
